Welcome to Spain and to the grand city of Madrid. You will be met at the airport and transferred to your hotel. The rest of the day is for free time, as you prepare to travel the Iberian Peninsula and see the best places to visit in Spain and Portugal. Accommodation at the hotel.
After breakfast you will embark on a panoramic city tour of Madrid; a rather logical initiation into any Iberian Peninsula tour. Overflowing with palaces, museums, and grand squares, Madrid is a truly majestic city. We will see the historical and architectural highlights, as well as contemporary Madrid, including the commercial and financial districts, the Las Ventas Bullring, and a spectacular sight for all football aficionados, the Santiago Bernabéu Football Stadium. In your free afternoon, explore this grand city on your own. It deserves it. Stroll through its streets, visit a museum, and enjoy some people watching over a cafe con leche or a copa de vino. This morning, we depart for Salamanca, which has got to be one of the loveliest cities on the Iberian Peninsula and, on a tour like ours, one of the most special and best places to visit in Spain and Portugal. The city has a truly golden glow due to the golden sandstone they used in its construction. The famous university, the two cathedrals, and the main square of the Plaza Mayor are just the highlights, but there are many more things to marvel at, and wandering round the old city (World Heritage Site) in your free time will lead you to a new treasure around every golden corner. We will then head to the Portuguese border, and on until reaching Porto. Accommodation at the hotel.
This morning, we take a guided tour of the city, which is considered to be one of the most beautiful cities and places to visit in Spain, visiting the Mezquita or Mosque-Cathedral, one of the most beautiful buildings you will see on this Spain package tour. We will then explore the city’s atmospheric Jewish quarter, the Juderia, with its intricate network of lanes and buildings decorated with wrought iron, and other city sites under the auspices of UNESCO. We then continue on towards Seville, the capital of Southern Spain and a city not to be missed on any Spain package tour, both for its beauty and its lively atmosphere, the city made famous by Carmen, Don Juan, and Figaro. The afternoon is at leisure for you to discover the delights of Seville. Dinner and accommodation at the hotel.
After breakfast, we depart for Coimbra. This is the city seat of one of the oldest universities in Europe and the birthplace of Fado, Portuguese folk music. Enjoy some free time and check out everything Coimbra has to offer: wandering through its inviting, Arab-flavored old town, a maze of narrow lanes, timeworn shops, and little tascas (cheap eateries). We continue to Fatima, the center of the Christian Faith on the Iberian Peninsula and a World Pilgrimage Sanctuary, with its impressive Basilica and the Cova da Iria. A hundred years ago, this sleepy rural town suddenly shot to international renown when three children reported seeing an apparition of Mary here. Since then, Fátima has become a wildly popular destination for fait-based tourism on the Iberian Peninsula. At night you have the chance to attend the procession of the candles. We will start this day with a visit to Batalha Monastery, one of the most magnificent buildings on the Iberian Peninsula. Its gothic structure is beautifully preserved and it is complimented by ornation in Manueline style. Marvel at the structure and at the many delicate carvings, no wonder it is a Unesco World Heritage site. We continue to possibly the most famous and picturesque Portuguese fishing town of Nazaré, unique in many ways, with an atmosphere of times gone by. After free time, we continue to Alcobaça (World Heritage) with its Gothic church and Cistercian monastery, whose origins date back to the 11th century. Lastly, we head for the capital, Lisbon. How about an optional traditional dinner with Fado, the hauntingly beautiful typical Portuguese music?
We start the morning with a sightseeing tour of the ancient Olissipo, driving through its main squares and avenues, Belem Tower, Jeronimos Monastery, Coach Museum (entrance included), the Monument to the Discoverers, the Marquis of Pombal Square, and Liberty Avenue. Free time in the afternoon is for you to get to know the oldest town in western Europe, catch the nostalgic corners of the Alfama Quarter, or take the famous number 28 Lisbon tram passing through the popular tourist districts of Graca, Alfama, Baixa, and Estrela. You’ll ride in a quaint, screeching, yellow tram through the city’s narrow streets, home to the genuine “tabernas”, where Fado transports listeners back to the past. Every tour to the Iberian Peninsula needs a visit to the City of Light, generally one of the most intriguing and best places to visit in Spain and Portugal. This morning we depart to Caceres, the province’s capital, whose storied past led to its declaration as a World Heritage City. It is not called Ciudad Monumental without reason. With its Roman, Moorish, and conquistador architecture, and surrounded by medieval walls and stork-topped watchtowers, it actually managed to avoid the brunt of Europe’s wars and remain surprisingly intact, becoming the first Spanish city listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Stroll through the old town and soak up all its histories before continuing south towards Cordoba, once the capital of the Caliphate. Dinner and accommodation at the hotel.

We discover grand Seville on a morning sightseeing tour, including the famous Royal Alcázar, the Cathedral of Santa Maria (the second-largest in the Catholic world after St. Peters in Rome), the Santa Cruz quarter (a backdrop in “Carmen”, and precisely where the myth of “Don Juan” developed), Maria Luisa Park, and Plaza de España. Afternoon free time is for you to explore and enjoy the sights, sounds, and flavors of this vibrant city, known as the most Spanish city in the whole of Spain, with its narrow streets, abundant sun, palm trees and orange trees, flamenco and bull fighting, tapas and wine… No wonder it is regularly voted among the 5 best places to visit on the Iberian Peninsula. Dinner and accommodation at the hotel. In the evening you may opt for a Flamenco Tour, as this dance is as passionate and mysterious as the city itself.
This morning we head south, enjoying the landscape, stopping in Ronda, one of Andalusia’s famous ‘white’ villages, loaded with history. It is built on a rocky outcrop and split in half by deep river gorge, the El Tajo, created by the river Guadalevin, which is spanned by an 18th-century arched bridge, the Puento Nuevo, and tall whitewashed houses perched along the edge. One of the most picturesque places to visit in Spain, Orson Wells and Earnest Hemingway both lived here for a while, one of the scenes in his book For Whom the Bell Tolls takes place in Ronda. You will take some free time to stroll through this quaint town. Continue on to the Costa del Sol, one of the sunniest spots on the Iberian Peninsula for sun worshipers and for many tourists one of the best places to visit in Spain and Portugal. Did you know that grand Seville, intimate Cordoba, and spectacular Granada form the Andalusian Golden Triangle? After breakfast we depart towards the city of Granada, the last stronghold of the Moorish Kingdoms up to 1492. The city is home to the Alhambra Palace and the immaculate Generalife Gardens, which make up one of the most beautiful attractions on the Iberian Peninsula, even inspiring several literary works, such as the Tales of the Alhambra by W. Irving. Enjoy your free afternoon in one of the best cities to visit in Spain and the city that for many embodies the true essence of Spain – the spirited people, rich history, warm climate, narrow streets littered with beautiful flower pots, traditional Flamenco shows, and a free tapa with every glass of wine. Dinner and accommodation at the hotel, with an optional Gipsy Flamenco show at Sacromonte Square.
This morning we drive northward, under the skies of Castilla, to the impressive Imperial city of Toledo – a World Heritage City – where in the 13th century Christians, Moors, and Jews lived together, and their churches, mosques, and synagogues combine with other buildings from this era to give Toledo its unique and attractive combination of architectural styles. A real thriving hub of Spanish art, history, and spirituality, the whole town is a National Monument and one of the most spiritual cities to visit in Spain and Portugal. We will enjoy a short guided tour of this historical old town through its narrow lanes and then visit the famous “Damasquinado” (gold and silver inlaying in iron) factory. At last, we continue to Madrid. Accommodation at the hotel.
After breakfast you will be transferred to the airport and begin your journey home.
