Welcome to Spain and to the grand city of Madrid. You will be met at the airport and transferred to your hotel. Enjoy your free time to explore Spain’s capital city. It has long been Europe’s cultural capital and so it is one of the best places to visit in Spain when it comes to arts and culture. Accommodation at the hotel.
After breakfast you will embark on a city tour of Madrid; a rather logical initiation into any Spain package tour and one of the best cities to visit in Spain. Overflowing with palaces, museums, and grand squares, Madrid is a truly majestic city. We will see the historical and architectural highlights, as well as contemporary Madrid, including the commercial and financial districts, the Las Ventas Bullring, and a spectacular sight for all football aficionados, the Santiago Bernabéu Football Stadium. In your free afternoon, explore this grand city on your own. It deserves it. Stroll through its streets, visit a museum, and enjoy some people watching over a cafe con leche or a copa de vino. Let’s drive northward today to the impressive Imperial city of Toledo – a World Heritage City – where in the 13th century Christians, Moors, and Jews all lived together. The city’s churches, mosques, synagogues, and other buildings from this era give Toledo its unique and attractive combination of architectural styles. A real thriving hub of Spanish art, history, and spirituality, the whole town is a National Monument, included in many Spain package tours. We will enjoy a short guided tour of this historical old town through its narrow lanes and then visit the famous “Damasquinado” (gold and silver inlaying in iron) factory. Toledo is beyond a doubt one of the most artistic, spiritual, and interesting places to visit in Spain. At last, we return to Madrid. Accommodation at the hotel.
After breakfast, we depart for Salamanca, which has got to be one of the loveliest cities on the Iberian Peninsula. The city has a truly golden glow due to the golden sandstone they used in its construction. The famous university, the two cathedrals, and the main square of the Plaza Mayor are just the highlights, but there are many more things to marvel at, and wandering round the old city (World Heritage Site) in your free time will lead you to a new treasure around every golden corner. We will then head to the north until reaching Santiago de Compostela. Accommodation at the hotel.
Today you will explore this important medieval town, which earned a privileged spot on European maps as the final resting place of the Apostle Saint James, since attracting millions of pilgrims along a network of pilgrimage paths known collectively as the Caminos de Santiago. Your guide will tell you fascinating legends and anecdotes about saints and sinners, Romans and Celts, pilgrims and tourists. Overnight in Santiago de Compostela, one of the most desired and spiritual spots on any Spain tour. In the afternoon we visit Cap Finisterre where pilgrims ceremoniously burn their boots. The day finishes with an early seafood dinner accompanied by Albariño wine.
Today, you will have the opportunity to see how diverse a northern Spain tour can be; we will be passing through the ancient forests of Galicia and cross to the four hundred and one kilometres of the coast of Asturias, a land of fishing families and passing pilgrims for centuries that has now been turned into a tourist destination. The day ends in Oviedo.
You will explore Oviedo with a local guide, showing you the 9th-century churches built when the city was the capital of Christian Spain, and visit the Cathedral of the Holy Saviour. Afternoon is at leisure. Optional visit of a cider house with dinner.
Enjoy the drive along the Costa de Cantabria and head to Santillana del Mar, often referred to as one of the most beautiful villages in the whole of Spain. Tour the steep streets, cobbled in medieval stone and lined with timber houses and caramel-coloured architecture. The town was built around the collegiate church of Santa María and is dotted with old defence towers and Renaissance palaces. In its vicinity, we visit the famous Altamira Caves where prehistoric art is well preserved. Continue to Santander. King Alfonso XIII used to spend his summers here a hundred years ago and now the town remains popular among fashionable madrileños, who like to be seen sauntering along the belle epoque El Sardinero seafront. Arrival to Bilbao in the evening.
Bilbao is a great destination for architecture lovers, whether old and historic or cutting-edge and modern. The buildings that stand out are Frank Gehry’s Guggenheim museum of contemporary art, the Azkuna Zentroa – redesigned by Philippe Starck – and the Bilbao Santiago Cathedral, built in the 15th century. After the visit of the Guggenheim museum and some free time for lunch (try pintxos, the Basque tapas), you can explore the streets of the old town, the “Casco Viejo”. You will find plenty of delicious options for continuing your Spain tour with dinner in the old town. Night in Bilbao.
